First-of-its-kind green rating systems for affordable housing & existing cities launched by IGBC

The Green Building Congress 2017 organised by CII-India Green Building Council (CII-IGBC) was marked by the launch of green rating systems in existing cities, and in affordable housing and interior design projects throughout India. Developed by IGBC, the rating systems aim to provide designers, builders and architects guidelines to apply green concepts in built areas and so achieve measurable, positive environmental impacts.

The IGBC Green Cities (Existing Cities) Rating System aims to create guidelines for existing and brownfield cities identified for the centre’s Smart/AMRUT Cities program. Greening existing cities can reduce peak power demand by 10-12%, lighting consumption by 25-30%, and water consumption by 15-20%.

The IGBC Green Affordable Housing Rating system is the first-of-its-kind rating system to address sustainability and promote higher living standards for occupants across all strata of society. The Green Affordable Housing Rating is applicable for housing projects designed with carpet-area less than or equal to 60 sq.m per dwelling unit, which constitute at least 70% of the total project built up area throughout India.

The event also featured programs that awarded ‘Platinum’ green rating status to 5 metro corporations across India – Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited, Chennai Metro Rail Limited, Kochi Metro Rail Limited, L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited, and Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation Limited. Jaipur and Secunderabad railway stations also earned silver rating status.

Additionally, over 130 green building projects across the country were recognized for adhering to sustainability metrics including water and energy efficiency, reduction in fossil fuel use, handling of consumer waste and conservation of natural resources. These projects include government buildings, commercial, office, residential, factory, hotel, hospital, bank, IT park, school, airport and metro buildings.

The 3-day CII-IGBC Green Building Congress 2017 held between 5th – 7th October 2017 was attended by participants from 31 country World Green Building councils.

The event featured an exhibition on green materials, products and technologies, along with focus sessions on Healthcare, schools, homes and affordable housing.
